For the first time in the history of our sport, the PWA Youth World Wave World Cup has landed on Australian soil.
If you are a wave sailor in NSW, you need to be paying attention.
Right now, the best junior windsurfers on the planet are rigging up in Geraldton, Western Australia. We are talking about the future of the discipline—names like Japan’s phenom Ryoma Sugi and our own West Oz chargers like Tyler Wallrodt and Sarah Kenyon—throwing down in conditions that most adults would second-guess.
This isn’t just a competition; it’s a statement. It’s proof that the Southern Hemisphere is the ultimate proving ground for high-performance wave sailing.
The Arena: “Coros” vs. The World
For those who haven’t made the pilgrimage West, Coronation Beach (“Coros”) is a relentless wind factory. Unlike the gusty, shifting Southerlies we battle at Botany or the tricky setups at Long Reef, Gero delivers consistent, nuking wind and ramp after ramp.
It is the perfect canvas for the modern wave sailor: high jumps, technical riding, and zero room for hesitation. Watching the international fleet try to decode the heavy Australian wind swell while the locals look to defend their home turf is going to be the narrative of the summer.
The “Dream” vs. The Reality
At the NSW Wave Sailing Association, we talk a lot about the “Dream” of wave sailing—that perfect moment of weightlessness in a backloop or the G-force of a bottom turn. These kids are living that dream at full force.
But watching the livestream or the highlights isn’t just about entertainment. It’s about inspiration. It’s about seeing what is possible when talent meets time on the water.
When you see a 16-year-old stall a forward loop in 30 knots, it kills the excuses. It reminds us that whether you are 15 or 50, the only way to get better is to get out there and send it.
From Gerroa to Gero: The Pathway
You might be watching the footage from WA thinking, “How does my kid get there?” or even, “How do I get to that level?”
The answer is simple: Time on the water and the right community.
The sailors representing Australia in Geraldton didn’t start by landing doubles. They started in the shore break. They started at local camps. They started by getting thrashed and coming back for more.
This is exactly why we run the NSW Youth Wave Sailing Camp.
We are building the next generation of NSW chargers right here at Gerroa. We might not have the daily nuking trade winds of Geraldton, but we have world-class waves and a community of legends ready to pass on the knowledge.
