Interview with Peter Puhl in Gerroa
The NSW windsurfing community is buzzing with excitement as we dive into the world of competitive wave sailing through the eyes of Peter Puhl, a seasoned windsurfer and leading competitor in the Masters category. Last Season, our president Jason Juretic had the pleasure of interviewing Peter, where they discussed his journey, experiences, and insights into the thrilling world of windsurfing and wave sailing. Here is a summary of that interview.
Leading the Charge in 2023/24 Season
Peter, at 49 years old, is not just competing; he’s excelling! Currently holding the top spot in the Masters category (for competitors over 45) and ranking fourth in the Opens, Peter reflects on his extensive experience in the sport. His commitment and passion for windsurfing shine through as he talks about his recent performances.
Having recently participated in the Australian Titles at Shoalhaven Heads, Peter drew comparisons with his upbringing in Germany, where he learned to embrace various sailing conditions. “The NE side-onshore conditions at Shoalhaven Heads are what I’m used to,” he shared. “Jumping and down-the-line sailing is my forte, and these conditions really suit my style.”
Fuerteventura to Gerroa
Peter’s dedication to the sport is evident in his training regimen. In the early days Peter would spend considerable time honing his skills in the Canary Islands, particularly on Fuerteventura. With its consistent winds and perfect sailing directions, it’s no wonder that this location has become a favourite for many wave sailors. “Winter training in the Canaries is always a good option,” he noted, enthusiastic about the opportunities it presents.
When discussing other places to sail, Peter expressed his fondness for Gerroa, located on the south coast of New South Wales. “It’s an awesome place when conditions are right,” he enthused. “While it doesn’t always come together perfectly, when it does, it’s one of the best spots in the world for windsurfing.”
Northern Beaches Local
Residing on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Peter often rides with other windsurfers off Long Reef Headland when conditions are optimal. This camaraderie on the water adds to the vibrant local wind surfing scene, showcasing Peter’s connection to fellow enthusiasts and the sport itself.
Conclusion
Peter Puhl’s journey in windsurfing is a testament to passion, perseverance, and skill. As he continues to make waves in competitions, we look forward to witnessing his progress and cheering him on. Stay tuned for more updates from our vibrant windsurfing community through out the coming season!
