The first day of the first event of the 2016/2017 season kicked off in the green, green hills of Port Kembla headland with glorious sunshine and fresh bacon and egg rolls cooked to perfection by the boundless enthusiasm and positive vibes of Elana. The perfect season start with 44 series registrations, . the wind building, the forecast promising, our freshly minted president Jessica welcomed the throng to the beautiful day, Jason reminded us to have fun and help others less fortunate with any spare gear, the mood was good, the smiles wide and the excitement palpable! With northerlies in play, the call was made to relocate to our hallowed ground of Gerroa and skippers meeting set for 1pm. A short time later with the new location, the wind and waves were getting tantalisingly close to perfection, light wind gear rigging was enthusiastic, early testers were out, with just enough wind to glide onto some clean shoulder high lines, tents were erected, sound systems were running with Tritian selecting some cool tunes she called the ‘feelin good’ selection and it was indeed, Parkers juice was flowing, judging sheets were set, the draw was posted and we were ready! In the end it didn’t fire for competition conditions and the day was called at the 3pm briefing but serious light air kudos must go to Francois who, with his lithe frame and big gear was picking off wave after wave and making us all wonder how he did it?! He was on the water without a break for well over two hours in 6 knots but must have caught 40 waves!!!!! Jessica was of course, as usual, making 6 knots look like 15 and I swear she hit an areal on one wave which just seemed completely impossible in the light air?!! Tim travelled all the way from SA and was enthusiastically milking the conditions for all they were worth with his stubby and must have hit the lip dozens of times using sheer willpower for speed. Our current King of Peru, Forest the Amazonian shredder, came down in a family affair late in the day to help brothers and regale others with his Conquistadorian conquests of late. Despite the wind never cracking even 10 knots the crew had an excellent first day of the official season playing in crystal clear smooth lines and with more northerlies forecast tomorrow we’ll be back there for another crack at 11.30am skippers meeting with first possible heats at high noon. Until then this is your head judge Simeon signing off, sleep well and tomorrow we play again!
